non-ZTS is really not an option for me, as apache, mysql, other ext's
are all built in/around thread-safe php.

that said, i've re-tried this with all fresh sources (even tho i don't
think it was a problem before ... but better safe than sorry), to no
avail. same fatal, non-descript error.

i've also tried this on a number of different boxes ... same story.
