Thanks for the pointers. Indeed, GCC and Debian was the issue.
To be clear, I had recently used apt-get upgrade, which updated
libc6. The combination of that upgrade and the existing GCC caused
the error.
To fix it, I applied the following (making sure that testing was in
my apt sources list):
$ sudo apt-get install gcc-4.1 -f testing
$ ./configure --enable-xdebug
$ make
