A clarification:

I received an email response directly - which mentioned DTrace
(<http://pecl.php.net/package/DTrace>). That is what I am after, but
I also have the requirement that it must work on Linux :(

The 'solution' has to retrofit well into applications well. I don't
want to run all my mysql_query() functions through some wrapper to be
able to achieve this.
