I think this is something that eclipse/PDT does. Neither Xdebug or
Firefox do as far as I know.

Yes, as soon as Xdebug enters the script the IDE should break. At least
Komodo provide functionality to change variables. I don't know wither
PDT or other IDEs support that. I don't think they do though.
